Stress Management

Everyone meets stress at some point: never-ending bills, demanding schedules, work, and family. It can feel inescapable and out of your control. Stress-management skills are about taking back control of your lifestyle, your thoughts, and your emotions, and learning healthy ways to cope.

Find the cause

The first step is naming your stressors. That sounds simple, but chronic stress is rarely simple, and most people do not realize how their own habits feed it. Maybe the work piling up is less about the job and more about procrastination. Owning your part in creating the stress is what makes it possible to change it.

Strategies for stress management

Once you know what causes your stress, focus on what you can control. Cut the stressors you realistically can, and build consistent habits that release pressure. Instead of scrolling in bed after work, take a walk or read. Eating well, moving your body, and getting real sleep all ease stress.

Set aside time for yourself and for rest. That can look like anything that restores you: prayer, a quiet bath, music, a funny movie, tai chi, or yoga. And do not carry it alone. Reach out to family and friends, whether you need help with a problem or just someone to listen. If stress becomes chronic, a counselor can help.
